Sheboygan, Wis. – May 31st, 2023–The Sheboygan Water Safety Group is made up of members of Sheboygan Fire Department, Sheboygan Police Department, Sheboygan Cou
nty Emergency Management, US Coast Guard, Sheboygan Dept of Public Works and Sheboygan Planning & Development. This group works on ways to make our Lake Michigan shoreline safer for our citizens and visitors.
One area of opportunity that has been identified, is better communication of the location of a water emergency, for both the 911 caller and the responding agencies. To help with this, location signs are being strategically placed at waterfront access points. Similar to using an address, each sign identifies the location using a number, which a 911 caller can give to an emergency dispatcher. This number then correlates to a GPS location to which responders can be sent to conduct a rescue in a coordinated effort.
The Sheboygan Water Safety Group is excited for this program to roll out over the next month and we look to provide new safety initiatives in the years to come.
