Take a Fresh Look at Sheboygan’s Downtown

June 9, 2016 by Mayor's Office

Sheboygan’s Business District embarked on an exciting rebranding, and is now known as Sheboygan Squared. This effort creates more distinct districts, each with their own amenities, attractions, and vibe. These districts, Downtown and Harbor Center, are the heart of Sheboygan and this new branding helps each of them shine.
Sheboygan Squared has launched new beautification and streetscaping efforts throughout the District, making Downtown Sheboygan bright and inviting while providing district identification. Included in the enhancements are an abundance of flowers, showing up in the traditional corner planters, mid-street baskets anchored to light poles, and new this year, large individual planter boxes delivered to participating member merchants. The resulting bursts of color are beautiful to see and welcoming to residents and visitors alike.
The rebranding effort also continues with many additional Sheboygan Squared logo signs added to further highlight the vibrancy of the City’s core. Along with the visual upgrades, the atmosphere will be energized with the installation of a wireless music system circling the water feature area of the Library Plaza. Relax at the rushing water’s edge on the new umbrella picnic tables while listening to the melodies of Mozart and Brahms.
Water is integral to Sheboygan culture, from sailing to paddle boarding and surfing to charter fishing, Lake Michigan and the Sheboygan River are the heart of Sheboygan. Sheboygan’s miles of lakefront, sandy beaches, and rolling river entice thousands of visitors each year, and all of these visitors attribute to millions of dollars in visitor spending.
As we get ready to welcome up to 700 new residents to the area, a coordinated effort to attract new retailers and merchants is underway. Sheboygan’s retail development opportunities start Downtown and continue on the waterfront. Sheboygan’s Harbor Centre Districts include the Riverfront and South Pier. Retail opportunities exist in both these waterfront locations. Both the Riverfront and South Pier have special architectural interest, boutique shopping and outstanding restaurants.
Moving throughout the area is easy with the public transportation enhancements that have been recently introduced. Shoreline Metro has dedicated a route to Sheboygan’s downtown and waterfront areas, and has dubbed it ‘The Square’. This route runs on a 30-minute loop from Memorial Day through Labor Day and only costs $1 per person per day. This service provides an affordable, efficient and easy way to navigate around Sheboygan’s core.
Downtown Sheboygan is home to some of the highest quality cultural amenities in the area. Sheboygan Squared has recognized Downtown Sheboygan’s potential as an art, culture, and food hub, which is being reflected in the coordinated re-branding and districting efforts underway in Sheboygan’s core. In Downtown Sheboygan you can take in outstanding live entertainment, one-of-a-kind art, and dine at a variety of local restaurants, including some of the most acclaimed in the state. Be sure to catch a concert mid-week in Downtown. Levitt AMP concerts and local food trucks return to JMKAC on Thursdays starting June 16th and the Sheboygan Pops Band performs every other Wednesday at the Fountain Park Bandshell starting on Wednesday June 15th.
Unique cultural entities drive hundreds of thousands of visits to Downtown Sheboygan each year. Perhaps most notably, the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, a not-for-profit art museum, stands in downtown Sheboygan. The JMKAC boasts 12 art galleries in 99,000 square feet of space and is one of the few museums in the world to focus on collecting and preserving art-environments.
Sheboygan’s Downtown and Harbor Centre, Sheboygan Squared, are changing for the better. But don’t just take my word for it, come on down and see for yourself!
