In Praise of Pollinators
By Lisa Vihos – Sheboygan Poet Laureate
Come forth,
you bees, you honey and bumble,
you pollen wasps and ants
you bee flies, hoverflies,
blowflies and mosquitoes.
Come forth, lepidopterans!
Yes you, butterflies and moths.
Also flower beetles,
bats and hummingbirds,
honeyeaters and sunbirds.
Let us not forget
monkeys, lemurs,
possums, and rodents.
You lizards, even you.
Everyone has a job to do.
Let us give thanks
to these creatures among us
destined to move pollen
from flower to flower
making our crops survive.
Let not one more day pass
that does not begin
in praise of pollinators.
For they are who keep us
and without them, we die.
