PRESS RELEASE
(FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 12, 2015)
SHEBOYGAN, WI – The City of Sheboygan has reached an agreement with Oakbrook Corporation to sell a portion of the former Boston Store property for the development of a new $10,200,000 mixed use project. The City of Sheboygan will provide $1,457,674 in Tax Incremental District 16 upfront developer incentives.
The project, anticipated to break ground in May 2016, will include 80 market rate apartments, with heated underground parking and 4,000 square feet of ground floor retail space fronting onto N. 8th Street. The proposed building will span between N. 7th Street and N. 8th Street on the northern portion of the vacant lot. The building’s design will be integrated with the Arts/Culture plaza, which will continue to be owned and maintained by the City of Sheboygan.
Proposed plan as provided by Oakbrook Corporation
“Oakbrook is excited to partner with the City on this important project in downtown Sheboygan. The location presents a unique and exciting opportunity to create a mix of contemporary housing and dynamic retail space in close proximity to some of the City’s great amenities and cultural attractions” states Michael Morey, Vice President, Oakbrook Corporation.
Downtown Sheboygan has been identified as an area in great need of additional urban living opportunities. The City and its’ partners have been aggressive in working out an agreement to bring more housing to the Downtown area. “I think this makes us more competitive with recruiting new hires looking to relocate for employment in our community and also provides a venue for arts and cultural activities,” City Planning Director Chad Pelishek said. Earlier this year, the City of Sheboygan first celebrated the opening of New York Avenue and additional parking on N. 8th Street in anticipation of this project. The inaugural Levitt AMP Sheboygan Concert Series was a huge success bringing 14,000 on the former department store property. Under the plan, concerts will still be performed on the existing greenspace from June to August. In September 2016, the City plans to begin work on the improvements involved with the new Arts/Culture greenspace.
“Sheboygan once again has an unique opportunity to bring more free concerts to the downtown, plus new modern rental housing adjacent to the arts/culture plaza. The proposed plan for the former Boston Store site will be a catalyst to revitalizing our central business district”, states Michael Vandersteen, Mayor of the City of Sheboygan.
Now is the time to vote to bring back the Levitt AMP Sheboygan Concert Series through November 30, 2016. Visit the following link: http://grant.levittamp.org/
