City Green Grand Opening

June 21, 2018 by Mayor's Office

City GreenThe grand opening of City Green and the opening of a new public art display on N. 8th Street will be held on Thursday, June 21. The art display is a partnership with the John Michael Kohler Arts Center (JMKAC) and Sheboygan Squared. Attend the reception at 5:00 pm to be one of the first to see Diana Gabriel’s large-scale art installation. This new addition to JMKAC’s Art in Public Spaces program is located in the alleyway next to the Korthals Enterprises building in the 500 block of North Eighth Street, downtown Sheboygan.

Sheboygan’s North High School Drumline performance will start at 5:45 at Diana Gabriel’s art installation and march to City Green to take over the stage. The Drumline’s performance will transition into the Cold Soda Club concert at 6:00 pm while the Warped Dance Company will present a special aerial performance. At 7:00 pm Boogát will perform, blending hip-hop with Latin styles such as cumbia, salsa, and reggaeton.

This concert kicks off the start of the fourth year of the Levitt AMP Music Series in Sheboygan featuring original artists. The new City Green venue has ample seating space – attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for their own comfort. Grounds, food, and concessions open at 5:30 pm each Thursday night of the concert series. Alcohol carry-ins are not allowed, but beverages will be available to purchase at the 3 Sheeps Brewing Company tent.

Located on the corner of New York Avenue and North 7th Street, City Green is the new public green space launched by the City of Sheboygan to encourage more community engagement and interaction. It is a unique arts and entertainment green space that’s designed as meet-up space for residents and visitors. It’s a natural pathway between a vibrant art district and a thriving downtown scene. Community activities at City Green continue throughout the summer:

  • The Community Recreation Department is hosting adult yoga classes on Monday and Wednesday nights and youth yoga classes on Tuesday and Thursday mornings; there is a nominal registration fee, drop-ins are welcome.
  • Craft 30 is expanding its Summer Solstice event on June 22 and 23 to encompass City Green as well as its microbrew pub at 1015 South 10th Street. This free-admission festival showcases craft beer and live music by all-Wisconsin bands; trolley rides back and forth are $1.
  • The Mead Public Library is hosting free family nights on Tuesdays beginning June 26 featuring a variety of activities.
  • JMKAC’s 48th annual Midsummer Festival of the Arts on July 21 and 22 will spill from the streets into the City Green space.
  • Visit Sheboygan is hosting two family-friendly “Picnic on the Green” events on Saturday, July 28 and Saturday, August 18 from 4 pm to 7 pm. Sheboygan Squared is working with area restaurants to offer a picnic-style, casual menu to go. Just bring your blanket or lawn chair, and enjoy the show.
  • The City Green season comes to a close on September 21 with the Brats 4 Sails event featuring the Honey Goats Band, hosted by the Sailing Education Association of Sheboygan (SEAS).
