The City of Sheboygan is happy to be celebrating Arbor Day and 42 years as being designated Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation. We’re proud to be the longest running Wisconsin community with this designation as it shows our commitment to our Urban Forest. CLICK HERE TO VIEW ARBOR DAY PROCLAMATION. Due to the inability to gather and hold an event, which is more typical of an Arbor Day Celebration, this year we are providing this posting to keep our community up to date with what the Forestry Division is doing. We’re also excited to share storytime in this video:
Earlier this month the tree crew planted 100 street trees. Some of these replaced stumps from trees that were recently cut down, and others filled in bare spots where adjacent landowners requested a tree be planted. Below are some photos from this project.
We could fit 23 trees on this trailer:
Stumps were ground out of the way to make room for the new trees. Some stumps like this one were very large:
Trees were removed from their container and placed at the proper depth in the planting hole:
Our topsoil truck filled around each tree with soil:
Mulch was placed around each tree to provide a good moisture retainer:
Trees were watered to complete the planting process:
Here are the locations of the 100 street trees planted in April 2020:
There’s more exciting tree planting planned for this year:
May 2020
- 83 trees will be planted along North Avenue between N. 15th Street and Calumet Dr.
- 58 trees will be planted along the roads in the SouthPointe Enterprise Campus
September-November 2020
- 50-100 trees will be planted in some of our city parks
- 100 street trees will be planted in requested areas
Are you a city resident that would like a tree planted along the street adjacent to your property? If so please contact the City Forester Tim Bull and he will determine if a tree is suitable for that location, if it is then we will plant one there this fall at no cost to you. Please understand this is a new program we are getting started and for now it is very informal. We have 100 street trees available to plant this fall and they will go to the first 100 suitable requests. It is our goal to continue this format every spring and fall for the foreseeable future. If for some reason the requests become too numerous to fulfill a more formal program will develop.
Thank you for your interest in Arbor Day 2020, I hope you enjoyed the book reading and the update on the Forestry Division planting.
