City of Sheboygan Celebrates 10 Years of Participation in Wisconsin DNR’s Green Tier Legacy Communities Program

December 18, 2024 by Veronica Valdez

Sheboygan, Wisconsin – December 18, 2024 – The City of Sheboygan is proud to celebrate 10 years of participation in the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) Green Tier Legacy Communities (GTLG) Charter. This milestone was recognized at the recent Green Tier Connections event held in Milwaukee in October, where Sheboygan and other communities were acknowledged for their environmental achievements and continued commitment to sustainability.

To honor this achievement, the City of Sheboygan was presented with a plaque commemorating its decade-long involvement in the Green Tier Legacy Communities program. The program, managed by the Wisconsin DNR, is designed to support Wisconsin communities in adopting sustainable, environmentally responsible practices through collaboration and innovative strategies. GTLG participants commit to superior environmental performance by prioritizing sustainability, improving resilience, and engaging with the public in meaningful environmental stewardship initiatives.

“We are incredibly proud of the progress Sheboygan has made over the past 10 years,” said Ryan Sorenson, Mayor of Sheboygan. “This recognition reflects our collective efforts to improve environmental practices, from renewable energy installations to enhancing water quality. The Green Tier program has been instrumental in helping us make sustainable decisions that benefit both our community and the environment.”

The City of Sheboygan’s participation in the Green Tier Legacy Communities program has been marked by a focus on renewable energy projects, water quality protection, and providing educational resources for residents. These efforts have contributed to a more sustainable and resilient community, setting an example for other municipalities across the state.

The Green Tier program, part of the Wisconsin DNR’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainability, recognizes communities that demonstrate leadership in environmental performance and a willingness to go beyond compliance with state regulations. Communities participating in the program have access to resources and guidance from the DNR, allowing them to develop strategies that help reduce their environmental impact and improve quality of life for residents.

Sheboygan remains committed to pushing forward with its sustainability efforts, including plans to further reduce the city’s environmental footprint, increase community engagement, and set new goals for environmental stewardship.
